This is the question I hear most often in my practice! One of the things I love about Chinese Medicine is how it looks at disharmonies in the entire body, not just one symptom. Therefore it is great to treat a number of disorders, not just those below. If you have any questions about something specific you'd like to come in for, please contact me and I'll be happy to answer your questions.
Acupuncture can be used to treat a number of health problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) recognize acupuncture’s effectiveness to treat the following disorders:
Pain: low back pain, sciatica, headache, migraine, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, wrist pain, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, osteoarthritis, tooth pain, dental pain and trigeminal neuralgia
GI Problems: digestive trouble, nausea, colitis, diarrhea, hiccough, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and vomiting
Women’s Health: reproductive problems, menopause, PMS, menstrual irregularities, morning sickness, fertility and UTIs
Immune System: sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, sore throat, pneumonia and common cold
Emotional Health: stress, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), anxiety and depression
Other Disorders: sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue, asthma, dizziness, gingivitis, eye problems, incontinence, addictions and smoking cessation
Thing I Commonly Treat in Practice:
A large part of my practice is made up of women's health. I have experience treating infertility, including working with women going through IUI and IVF procedures. I also see a lot of people for menopausal problems, PMS, irregular cycles, and PCOS. I have helped women during their pregnacies as well. I have had a semester long class in women's health during my TCM training. I have also taken a number of continuing education courses on women's health topics. In my experience, acupuncture can make a big difference in many cases.
Pain - Chronic and Acute
One of the most common things patients come to me for is the treatment of pain. I have seen people for a variety of pain conditions, both chronic and acute, including, headaches, migraines, jaw pain, neck pain, back pain, sciatica, knee pain, elbow pain, arthritis, foot pain, hand pain, etc.. I have taken numerous classes, both in school and continuing education, on the treatment of pain. I have experience working with athletes to people who sits at the desk all day. I have found acupuncture to be helpful for most pain conditions and definitley recommend it as a way to feel better.
The DC metro area is known for it's allergens. Many people move here and develop sinus problems, even if they never suffered from them in the past. Acupuncture is very effective to boost the immune system and help reduce allergy symptoms. Often people notice their nasal passages clearing while they're lying on the table! Here's a link to my May 2014 newsletter which has more details on how acupuncture can help allergies.
This is another common problem I see in my practice. Acupuncture works great to elevate mood and decrease stress. It can help lower cortisol levels and give a boost to those with adrenal fatigue.
